Erskineville Tiny House revisited

Erskineville Tiny House revisited

If only we could go back in time to discover what we were thinking about 25 years ago with precise clarity.

Luckily for me, being able to walk into a home I completed early in my career can provide such an insight.

Sitting on just 64m2 of land, this semi-detached cottage was small, dark, rundown and ripe for renewal. It didn’t make any sense to just ‘fix up’ what was already there when it was so inherently dysfunctional. Being located in a Heritage Conservation Area too meant there were real limitations on the amount of work that could be visible to the street.

There is an explosion of light and space, it feels like home, it makes you want to stay, relax and enjoy. It doesn’t seem right that it should feel so comfortable when most of the typical workers cottages are anything but.

Our design retains accommodation of two bedrooms, with the master being elevated, looking into the double height void of the kitchen, and west from its Juliet Balcony. Light streams in from all of the cardinal points, with the neighbouring cottage providing much needed shade to the north.

Ground floor has a side entry into the dining & kitchen area, a guest bedroom/study to the front. You walk through the spacious kitchen past laundry and bathroom to the lounge area which opens onto the courtyard garden.

Apart from a change in level to the rear boundary, there is also the Metro Train line behind which we have had to build solid landscaping feature to lessen the noise.

My original client, Michelle, still loves living in the home and asked me to discus ways to update and improve the home as a lot of the decisions we made were based on budget. It has lasted really well to get to this point in such good condition thanks to good care and maintenance.

Over the years we have completed a further 18 projects in Erskineville alone, but this one still evokes the spirit of the original transformation.
